Guide API?
One thing that I’ve been thinking a lot about (esp. now that Miro is nearing 1.0) is an API for the Guide. I’d love for the Guide to be more directly useful from Miro (think rating channels, getting recommendations, etc), but also more useful for other projects. After all, the Guide is a great resource for Internet TV channels, regardless of the software ones uses.
So I’m posing a question to the developers/users out there: what would you like to see in a Guide API? What would you like to be able to do/access? And how would you like to be able to access it?

I think that the most important thing to remember when opening an API is that you make sure it doesn’t affect the overall usability of the site and the speed of the database. Remember when myspace started to have addons and crap and it slowed down to something ridiculous? Facebook applications - need I say more? Just remember the focus of the program when opening up your system. That’s about it. Thanks

Yeah, that’s definitely on my mind. I’m hoping that at the same time as I’m creating the API, I’ll be able to simplify some of the database access that the website uses, making the whole experience better.

As a developer of another Internet TV platform (ToxTox: toxtox.tv) I would be very interested in an open API to the guide database. It would be extremely cool if the API also features functionality for giving feedback on channels (ratings) and search possibilities.

An OPML version of the guide would be very nice to.

One thing that I have been thinking about for the guide is the ability to hook into social networks, or instant messengers, to list what someone is watching now. There is stuff like this for Last.FM and this really serves to allow friends to see what their friends are listening to. This would serve the same purpose for Miro in that people who normally wouldn’t have heard of Miro would see that their friends were watching interesting things on Miro. So it would be very cool if the api allowed you to keep track of what you were presently watching (only should you want this of course).
