Software Engineer, Amara
We are looking for passionate, talented engineers who are driven to make positive impact in the world. We have positions open for Flex Engineers – independent software development professionals who are willing to work a flexible amount of hours.
PARTICIPATORY CULTURE FOUNDATION (PCF) is a nonprofit working to build a more open and collaborative world. Amara.org, our flagship product, is essentially the Wikipedia for subtitling and translating video. We work with individuals and orgs (including TED, Scientific American, GitHub, Khan Academy, and hundreds of others) to remove barriers to communication and make the web a more inclusive place.
PCF is based out of Massachusetts, but the team is global and works virtually. Our open culture is reflected in how we work together. The team relies on voice and video chat, as well as email and instant message to remain in close touch.
- Take on the development of new features, improvements, and/or other engineering tasks.
- Work closely with Product Development & Design (PDD) to set goals and hit milestones.
- Strong command of Python
- Ability to deliver clean, maintainable code
- Self-motivated, quick learner
- Automated web browser testing
How we collaborate
Flex Engineers will work closely with our Product Development & Design team to bring new features and functionality to life on the Amara platform. Amara is a multi-award winning technology that brings together communities of people to make content on the web more accessible.
More on the flex team model
As a small (but growing!) non-profit, we are very cautious with growth and resources. Our flex team model enables us both to get to know one another better, and ensure there's a good fit for long-term collaboration.
Amara flex engineers are independent contractors. Hourly rates are commensurate with skill-set and experience, so they do vary. We usually begin somewhere between 8 - 10 hours of work per week and scale from there. We're happy to work closely to tailor a plan that fits with your schedule and personal goals.
It's very important to us that everyone on our team is passionate about the work we do together, and have the desire to make the kind of global impact we are all striving to achieve.
Our commitment to diversity
The work of the Participatory Culture Foundation is strengthened by the diversity of our network and our differences in background, culture, experience, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, and much more. We welcome applications from people of color, women, the LGBTQIA community, and persons with disabilities.
How to apply
To apply, send a cover letter or personal statement (txt or rtf) to firstname.lastname@example.org. Feel free to include a resumé, links to projects you’ve worked on, your Github profile, or anything else we may find relevant.
